Requiem for an Elder: The Passing of Brother Blue

May the winds, rain and sunshine
raise his spirits to the place
where he will be among the ancestors
May he be recognized and welcomed
among the keepers of lore
and the warriors
for one of their own has come home
- A Prayer for Brother Blue
Mwalim *7)

Yesterday morning (11/3/09), the New World Griot, as well as the storytelling world in general lost a foundation elder with the passing of Brother Blue (aka Dr. Hugh Morgan Hill). To be a spoken-word artist or storyteller in New England and to have not been blessed to be an audience to or have in your audience Brother Blue means to have missed a true blessing from the spirits.

To have known him means that as storytellers and keepers of oral tradition it is up to us to keep the tradition alive, and keep telling our stories. That is the way to truly honor him.

Peace,

Bro. Mwalim *7)
